Why the Canadian Rockies deserve more than a long weekend

The classic Canadian Rockies route looks simple on a map: Calgary, Banff, Lake Louise, one spectacular highway and Jasper.

The reality is that each section can fill a day. Banff is surrounded by lakes and trails, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake now require proper transport planning, and the Icefields Parkway may be the most sightseeing-heavy road of the entire trip.

Jasper adds another huge national park rather than simply being the place where Highway 93 ends. In 2026 most of the park is open again after the 2024 wildfire, but some important areas remain closed and the best itineraries reflect that reality.

Eight days gives the trip room to work. Six is possible, but the Icefields Parkway still needs to remain a full sightseeing day.

Parks Canada shuttles are reservation-only. Lake Louise service runs May 15 to October 12, 2026, while Moraine Lake service runs June 1 to October 12, weather permitting. Moraine Lake Road remains closed to personal vehicles year-round.

Collect the rental car and leave Calgary after breakfast. Stop in Canmore for coffee, lunch or a short walk before continuing into Banff National Park.

Afternoon

Check into Banff, park the car and explore town on foot. If weather is clear, use the afternoon for Bow Falls, Surprise Corner or a short local trail rather than trying to force Lake Louise into day one.

Evening

Have dinner in Banff and keep the evening relaxed. You are going to use the next several days much better if you start rested rather than immediately chasing every viewpoint.

Afternoon

Use the Bow Valley Parkway or choose one longer walk. Johnston Canyon is popular, but if crowds are high, a quieter trail can give you a better Rockies experience.

Evening

Return to Banff for dinner. If you want one paid experience, Banff Upper Hot Springs or a gondola can work well here, but neither is essential to the road trip.

Evening

Stay around Lake Louise if your budget allows, or return to Banff. If you are driving back, avoid building another major evening activity into the schedule.

Afternoon

Head north toward Sunwapta Falls and Athabasca Falls before arriving in Jasper. Give each waterfall enough time to walk the paths properly rather than treating them as roadside photos.

Evening

Check into Jasper and have a quiet evening in town. The drive is not especially long, but the number of worthwhile stops makes the day feel substantial.

Begin the onward drive or return the car if you are using rail or another transport connection. If you are driving back to Calgary, consider adding a separate overnight rather than forcing the entire return after a full sightseeing morning.

Finish the trip with enough margin for fuel, traffic and rental-car drop-off.

Jasper 2026

Most of Jasper is open — but two famous areas are not

The 2024 wildfire changed parts of Jasper National Park. The good news is that most visitor areas have reopened, but 2026 itineraries need to reflect the remaining closures.

Parks Canada states that Maligne Canyon will remain closed for the entire 2026 season while safety assessment and rehabilitation work continue.

We would not try to fit Banff, both iconic lakes, the full Icefields Parkway and Jasper into four days. The route would still be beautiful, but you would spend too much of it calculating departure times.

For most dates, you need valid Parks Canada admission while stopping in the national parks. There is one important 2026 exception.

Do you need an SUV?

For a normal summer road trip on the paved Calgary–Banff–Lake Louise–Jasper route, no.

A midsize car is enough

Choose enough luggage room, comfort and good visibility. You do not need a huge SUV simply because mountains are involved.

A smaller vehicle can also make Banff and Jasper parking easier.

If you are travelling in winter or shoulder season, vehicle requirements and road conditions become a different conversation.

One-way rental can save a day

Calgary to Jasper works beautifully one way, but rental availability and drop fees vary.

Compare the one-way cost with the expense of retracing the Icefields Parkway and adding another night.

If a Jasper drop is expensive or unavailable, a return to Calgary can still work — just treat it as an additional travel day rather than pretending it is free time.

Lower elevations can be beautiful, but high trails and lakes may still be affected by snow or seasonal access.

Trying to visit Moraine Lake by car

The road between Lake Louise and Jasper is one of the trip’s major attractions. Give it a full day or split it overnight.

How many days do you need for Banff and Jasper?

Six days is enough for a fast first trip, but eight is much better. It gives Banff, Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway and Jasper enough time without forcing every day into a long drive.

Can you drive to Moraine Lake in 2026?

No. Moraine Lake Road remains closed to personal vehicles year-round. Parks Canada shuttles, licensed commercial operators and approved public transit are the main visitor options.

How much is the Lake Louise and Moraine Lake shuttle in 2026?
