Do not waste your first Rockies day driving straight through everything between Calgary and Banff. The mountains build gradually, and Canmore gives you an easy first stop before entering the national park.
Morning
Collect the rental car and leave Calgary after breakfast. Stop in Canmore for coffee, lunch or a short walk before continuing into Banff National Park.
Afternoon
Check into Banff, park the car and explore town on foot. If weather is clear, use the afternoon for Bow Falls, Surprise Corner or a short local trail rather than trying to force Lake Louise into day one.
Evening
Have dinner in Banff and keep the evening relaxed. You are going to use the next several days much better if you start rested rather than immediately chasing every viewpoint.
