Start with Iceland’s most famous sightseeing loop, but use it as the opening chapter of the Ring Road rather than racing back to Reykjavík at the end of the day.
Morning
Collect the car early and drive to Þingvellir National Park. Walk through the historic assembly area and geological landscape before the busiest part of the day.
Afternoon
Continue to the Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss. These are popular for a reason, but you do not need to turn every stop into a two-hour visit.
Evening
Continue south toward Selfoss or Hella. Staying outside Reykjavík puts you in a much better position for tomorrow’s South Coast.

Worth it
Þingvellir, Gullfoss and getting out of Reykjavík on day one.
Skip if rushed
Returning to Reykjavík just because the traditional Golden Circle is a loop.
Splurge here
A geothermal spa or memorable first-night dinner.
Save money
The main Golden Circle landscapes themselves are inexpensive to experience; budget mainly for parking and food.
