The route

Why the South Island is almost built for road trips

Few places give you this much variety within one road trip. You can wake beside an alpine lake, cross a mountain pass, enter rainforest and reach a wild coastline before dinner.

That compactness can also ruin itineraries. Because places look close on a map, travellers often add another town, another hike and another four-hour drive until the entire holiday becomes a schedule.

This route deliberately leaves out some excellent parts of New Zealand. That is the point. Twelve days is enough to experience the South Island properly if you protect the places that deserve full days.

Route snapshot

Christchurch → Tekapo → Mount Cook → Queenstown → Milford → Wanaka → West Coast → Arthur's Pass

The loop avoids unnecessary backtracking while keeping Milford Sound and the West Coast as proper destination days.

12-day itinerary

The South Island itinerary we would actually drive

The route gives the biggest landscapes enough time while avoiding unnecessary one-night stops wherever possible.

Day 1

Christchurch

Christchurch Airport → City

Driving

Light local driving

Overnight

Christchurch

Do not collect the car after a long international flight and immediately attempt a major South Island drive. Christchurch makes a useful first night and gives you time to reset before the scenery starts.

Morning

Arrive, collect your rental car when you are ready and check into your accommodation. If you have arrived very early, keep the first few hours deliberately easy.

Afternoon

Explore central Christchurch, the Botanic Gardens and the Avon River area. Use the afternoon to buy road-trip supplies and anything you do not want to hunt for later.

Evening

Have an early dinner and get some sleep. Tomorrow is when the road trip properly begins.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

Using Christchurch as a recovery and preparation day.

Skip if rushed

A four-hour drive immediately after a long-haul flight.

Splurge here

A comfortable central hotel for the first night.

Save money

Walk the city rather than booking activities.

Day 2

Christchurch → Lake Tekapo

Christchurch → Geraldine → Lake Tekapo

Driving

Around 3 hours before stops

Overnight

Lake Tekapo

The South Island begins to open up quickly once you leave Christchurch. Tekapo is more than a photo stop, especially if you stay after the day-trippers leave.

Morning

Leave Christchurch after breakfast and head southwest through Canterbury. Geraldine makes an easy coffee or lunch stop without overcomplicating the day.

Afternoon

Arrive at Lake Tekapo and explore the lakefront and Church of the Good Shepherd area. If the weather is clear, consider a walk around the Mount John area.

Evening

Stay for sunset and, if skies cooperate, make time for stargazing. The Mackenzie Basin is one of the reasons not to rush straight through to Mount Cook.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

Staying overnight rather than treating Tekapo as a roadside photo.

Skip if rushed

Trying to combine Tekapo and a full Mount Cook hiking day.

Splurge here

A stargazing experience.

Save money

Lakefront walks and the night sky cost nothing.

Day 3

Lake Tekapo → Aoraki / Mount Cook

Lake Tekapo → Lake Pukaki → Mount Cook Village

Driving

Around 1.5 hours before stops

Overnight

Mount Cook / Twizel

This is one of the shortest driving days for a reason. The approach beside Lake Pukaki is spectacular, and Mount Cook deserves enough time for a proper walk.

Morning

Leave Tekapo and stop at Lake Pukaki before following State Highway 80 toward Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.

Afternoon

Choose a walk that suits the weather, track conditions and your ability. Do not force a particular trail simply because it appears on every social-media itinerary.

Evening

Stay near Mount Cook if your budget allows. Otherwise Twizel gives you more accommodation choice while keeping you close to the Mackenzie landscape.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

Giving Mount Cook most of the day.

Skip if rushed

Driving in, taking one photo and immediately leaving for Queenstown.

Splurge here

A Mount Cook-area stay with mountain views.

Save money

Build the day around walking rather than paid attractions.

Day 4

Mount Cook → Queenstown

Mount Cook → Twizel → Lindis Pass → Cromwell → Queenstown

Driving

Around 3.5–4 hours before stops

Overnight

Queenstown

The road to Queenstown is another journey where the drive itself matters. Lindis Pass, Central Otago and the approach to Queenstown keep the day interesting.

Morning

Leave Mount Cook after breakfast and head south through Twizel and Omarama before crossing Lindis Pass.

Afternoon

Stop around Cromwell if you want lunch or a break, then continue toward Queenstown. Check in before attempting any major activity.

Evening

Walk the lakefront, explore town and choose dinner somewhere central. Queenstown is busy enough without trying to squeeze a full adventure day into arrival afternoon.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

Lindis Pass and a relaxed first evening in Queenstown.

Skip if rushed

Booking a fixed-time activity too close to your expected arrival.

Splurge here

A lake-view room or memorable dinner.

Save money

Explore the waterfront and town on foot.

Day 5

Queenstown

Queenstown & surrounding area

Driving

Optional

Overnight

Queenstown

Queenstown can be expensive very quickly. Pick the one or two experiences that genuinely matter to you and let the mountains do the rest.

Morning

Choose your priority: a hike, gondola, jet boat, scenic flight or a slower morning around the lake. Do not book three expensive activities simply because they are available.

Afternoon

Explore Arrowtown, take a lakeside drive or stay in Queenstown depending on what you chose for the morning.

Evening

Enjoy the town without needing to drive anywhere. This is a good night to spend more on food if you have saved on activities.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

One major Queenstown experience plus free scenery.

Skip if rushed

Stacking expensive attractions from breakfast to sunset.

Splurge here

The one adventure activity you would regret missing.

Save money

Arrowtown, lakefront walks and viewpoints.

Day 6

Queenstown → Te Anau

Queenstown → Kingston → Te Anau

Driving

Around 2 hours

Overnight

Te Anau

Te Anau is the strategic move that makes Milford Sound much better. Staying here turns tomorrow from an exhausting 600 km Queenstown return into a scenic Fiordland day.

Morning

Have a slower Queenstown morning before heading south. There is no need to leave at dawn because the drive to Te Anau is manageable.

Afternoon

Check into Te Anau, walk the lakefront and prepare for Milford Road. Fill the car with fuel and buy food and drinks for tomorrow.

Evening

Keep the evening quiet. Check the latest Milford Road and weather conditions before bed.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

Sleeping in Te Anau before Milford Sound.

Skip if rushed

Returning to Queenstown tonight just to avoid changing hotels.

Splurge here

A lakeside Te Anau stay.

Save money

Self-cater and prepare tomorrow's food here.

Day 7

Milford Sound / Piopiotahi

Te Anau → Milford Sound → Te Anau

Driving

240 km return; allow a full day

Overnight

Te Anau

Milford Sound is not a two-hour attraction. The road from Te Anau is one of New Zealand's great drives, with enough viewpoints and short walks to make the journey part of the experience.

Morning

Leave Te Anau with a full tank. Stop selectively along Milford Road while keeping enough margin for your cruise check-in. There are no fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound.

Afternoon

Take a Milford Sound cruise, then begin the return journey. If conditions are good and daylight allows, use the drive back for stops you deliberately skipped in the morning.

Evening

Return to Te Anau rather than pushing on to Queenstown or Wanaka. You have already had a substantial driving day.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

Milford Road plus a cruise as one complete day.

Skip if rushed

Driving from Queenstown and back yourself in the same day.

Splurge here

A smaller-boat cruise or guided Fiordland experience.

Save money

Self-drive from Te Anau and bring your own food.

Day 8

Te Anau → Wanaka

Te Anau → Queenstown → Crown Range → Wanaka

Driving

Around 3.5–4 hours

Overnight

Wanaka

After Milford, this is intentionally a lighter sightseeing day. Wanaka gives you the South Island mountain-town atmosphere with a different pace from Queenstown.

Morning

Leave Te Anau after breakfast and travel back toward Queenstown. Stop for lunch before continuing to Wanaka.

Afternoon

Take the Crown Range route if conditions are suitable, stopping safely at viewpoints. Arrive in Wanaka with enough time to walk the lakefront.

Evening

Have a relaxed evening in Wanaka and check tomorrow's weather before deciding how ambitious to make the morning.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

A slower Wanaka afternoon after the Milford day.

Skip if rushed

Another major paid activity immediately after arriving.

Splurge here

A comfortable lake-area stay.

Save money

Walk the waterfront and explore town.

Day 9

Wanaka → West Coast

Wanaka → Haast Pass → Franz Josef / West Coast

Driving

Around 4–5 hours before stops

Overnight

Franz Josef / Fox Glacier area

Haast Pass changes the character of the trip completely. Alpine lakes give way to rainforest, waterfalls and the wild West Coast.

Morning

Leave Wanaka and follow the lakes north toward Haast Pass. Allow time for short waterfall and forest stops rather than calculating only the end-to-end drive.

Afternoon

Continue through Haast and north along the West Coast. Weather can change quickly here, so keep your schedule flexible.

Evening

Stay around Franz Josef or Fox Glacier. Decide on tomorrow's activity only with current weather and access conditions in mind.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

The transition through Haast Pass.

Skip if rushed

Racing every other car between viewpoints.

Splurge here

A scenic glacier flight if conditions and budget align.

Save money

Waterfalls, forest walks and viewpoints.

Day 10

Glacier Country → Hokitika

Franz Josef → Ross → Hokitika

Driving

Around 2 hours before stops

Overnight

Hokitika

The West Coast works best when you stop trying to make every day huge. Use the morning around Glacier Country, then move north at an easy pace.

Morning

Choose a current open walk, viewpoint or weather-dependent glacier experience. Conditions matter more than the itinerary you wrote months earlier.

Afternoon

Drive north toward Hokitika, stopping where the coast, rainforest or small towns interest you.

Evening

Walk Hokitika's beach and town before sunset. It is a useful, low-pressure overnight before Arthur's Pass.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

A flexible morning rather than pre-booking the whole day.

Skip if rushed

Assuming glacier access is identical year to year.

Splurge here

A weather-dependent scenic flight.

Save money

Use the accessible walks and viewpoints.

Day 11

Hokitika → Arthur's Pass

Hokitika → Otira Gorge → Arthur's Pass

Driving

Around 2 hours before stops

Overnight

Arthur's Pass / nearby

Arthur's Pass gives the final part of the loop a completely different mountain landscape and prevents the West Coast from ending with one long drive back to Christchurch.

Morning

Leave Hokitika and climb inland toward Otira Gorge. Stop only in proper pull-offs; this is a mountain highway, not an informal viewing platform.

Afternoon

Choose an Arthur's Pass walk that matches the conditions. Keep food secure and never feed kea.

Evening

Stay locally if accommodation works for you, or continue partway toward Christchurch if you need a simpler final day.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

Breaking the West Coast-to-Christchurch journey in the mountains.

Skip if rushed

Feeding or encouraging kea for photographs.

Splurge here

Not much — this is a scenery and walking day.

Save money

Nearly everything worthwhile today is outdoors.

Day 12

Arthur's Pass → Christchurch

Arthur's Pass → Canterbury → Christchurch

Driving

Around 2.5 hours before stops

Overnight

Trip ends

The final drive closes the loop without requiring an exhausting last day. Leave enough margin for rental-car return and any flight connection.

Morning

Have breakfast around Arthur's Pass and take one final short walk if weather and timing allow.

Afternoon

Drive east across Canterbury toward Christchurch. Refuel before returning the rental car and allow more time than the navigation app suggests.

Evening

Fly onward or stay one final night in Christchurch if your international departure is early the following morning.

TravPost verdict

Worth it

A calm final day with proper airport margin.

Skip if rushed

A major hike before a same-day international flight.

Splurge here

An airport hotel if it removes stress from an early departure.

Save money

Return the car as soon as you no longer need it.

Milford Sound

The decision that makes this itinerary better: sleep in Te Anau

Milford Sound is remote. Treating Te Anau as your base makes the day safer, shorter and much more enjoyable.

From Te Anau

240 km return

DOC recommends allowing around eight hours when combining the drive, scenic stops, short walks and a Milford Sound cruise.

From Queenstown

600 km return

DOC says the Queenstown return can take 12–14 hours and recommends planning the trip from Te Anau instead.

Before leaving

Fill the tank

There are no fuel stations or shops between Te Anau and Milford Sound. Take food, water and insect repellent as well.

Shorter option

Only have 9 days?

This keeps the defining parts of the loop but removes the slower Christchurch, Hokitika and extra West Coast time.

Day 1

Christchurch → Lake Tekapo

Go straight to Tekapo only if you are rested enough to drive safely.

Day 2

Tekapo → Mount Cook → Queenstown

Early start and one shorter Mount Cook walk.

Day 3

Queenstown

One full Queenstown day.

Day 4

Queenstown → Te Anau

Prepare for Milford Road.

Day 5

Milford Sound → Te Anau

Full Fiordland day.

Day 6

Te Anau → Wanaka

Travel via Queenstown.

Day 7

Wanaka → Franz Josef

Haast Pass and West Coast.

Day 8

Franz Josef → Arthur's Pass

Longer day; keep stops selective.

Day 9

Arthur's Pass → Christchurch

Return for departure.

Do not forget New Zealand's visitor entry requirements

Entry requirements depend on your passport and circumstances, so always check Immigration New Zealand before travelling.

NZeTA

NZ$17 app / NZ$23 online

Immigration New Zealand currently lists these NZeTA request fees and advises allowing up to 72 hours for processing.

Visitor levy

NZ$100 IVL

Many international visitors pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy when requesting an NZeTA or applying for an eligible visa.

Important

Check your passport rules

Not every traveller needs the same permission or pays the same charges. Verify your own requirements on the official immigration website.

Avoid these

Six mistakes that can ruin a South Island road trip

Mistake 01

Trying to see the whole South Island

Twelve days is enough for an excellent route, not every famous location. Adding Nelson, Kaikoura and Dunedin to this loop usually makes it worse.

Mistake 02

Driving Queenstown–Milford–Queenstown yourself in one day

DOC describes the return journey as roughly 600 km and 12–14 hours. Base yourself in Te Anau instead.

Mistake 03

Underestimating road time

New Zealand roads can be narrow, winding and full of scenic stops. Distance alone does not tell you how tiring a day will be.

Mistake 04

Booking every night in a different town

Changing accommodation constantly turns a scenic road trip into a luggage-management exercise. Keep two-night bases where they matter.

Mistake 05

Treating bad weather as a failed day

Fiordland and the West Coast are wet places. Build flexibility into hikes, flights and cruises rather than expecting perfect conditions.

Mistake 06

Leaving fuel too late

Remote stretches have fewer services. Milford Road has no fuel between Te Anau and Milford Sound, so fill up before leaving.

When to go

The best season for this route

December–February

Peak summer

Long days and generally easiest road-trip conditions, but higher prices and heavier demand.

March–April

Excellent balance

Autumn colour, cooler temperatures and a strong mix of access and atmosphere.

May–September

Winter

Beautiful but more demanding. Snow and ice can affect alpine roads, including Milford Road.

October–November

Spring

Longer days return, but mountain weather can remain highly changeable.

Packing

What we would actually pack

You can experience sunshine, wind, heavy rain and cold alpine conditions on the same trip.

FAQ

South Island road trip questions

How many days do you need for New Zealand's South Island?

Nine days can cover the highlights quickly, but 12–14 days is much better for a first road trip. Three weeks gives you room to add regions without turning every day into a transfer.

Should you rent a car or campervan?

A car plus accommodation is usually simpler for a first trip. A campervan can be brilliant, but it does not mean you can camp anywhere and it adds vehicle size, campsite and waste-management considerations.

Should you stay in Te Anau for Milford Sound?

Yes for this itinerary. DOC recommends planning the Milford return journey from Te Anau; Queenstown to Milford and back is roughly 600 km and can take 12–14 hours.

How long should you allow for Milford Road?

DOC says Te Anau to Milford and back is 240 km and recommends allowing an eight-hour day if you want scenic stops, short walks and a Milford Sound cruise.

Is there fuel on Milford Road?

No. DOC advises filling up in Te Anau because there are no shops or fuel stations between Te Anau and Milford Sound.

Do international visitors pay a tourism levy?

Many international visitors must pay New Zealand's International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy when requesting an NZeTA or applying for an eligible visa. The IVL is currently NZ$100.

Final verdict

New Zealand is the road trip where the journey keeps competing with the destination.

The best version is not the itinerary with the most pins on the map. Give Mount Cook time, sleep in Te Anau before Milford, protect the West Coast drive and leave enough empty space to stop when the South Island gives you a reason.
