The NC500 starts with one of its most dramatic sections. Do not underestimate Bealach na Bà: it is scenic, steep and not the place to learn single-track-road etiquette under pressure.
Morning
Leave Inverness after breakfast and head west through the Highlands toward Lochcarron. Use the first part of the day to settle into the pace of the route rather than racing toward Applecross.
Afternoon
Drive Bealach na Bà only if conditions and your vehicle make it sensible. Stop at safe viewpoints, then descend toward Applecross and the coast.
Evening
Stay in Applecross or nearby Shieldaig. A quiet first night suits the route better than trying to push on to Torridon.
