Day 1
Chicago → Springfield, Illinois
Chicago → Joliet → Pontiac → Springfield
Driving
Around 4–5 hours before stops
Overnight
Springfield, Illinois
Start slowly. Route 66 is about roadside America, not proving how quickly you can leave Chicago behind.
Morning
Begin around the historic Chicago start area, then head southwest through the city and suburbs toward Joliet. Stop at one or two classic roadside sites rather than trying to photograph every sign.
Afternoon
Continue through Pontiac, where Route 66 heritage is easy to explore on foot, before heading toward Springfield.
Evening
Stay in Springfield and have an easy first night. The mileage is manageable, but the constant stops make the day longer than the map suggests.
